SYNOPSIS

He had the body of a surfer. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. Excellent teeth in a square jaw. “Nobody could take their eyes off of him.” Tab Hunter was, to millions of teenagers during the 1950s and 1960s, the most perfect sample of big screen beauty. But Hunter had a secret. A “drive” that was dangerous for a young actor with a future as a movie star, and which he shared with actors like Montgomery Clift, Rock Hudson or Anthony Perkins –all of whom Hunter had a conflictive relationship with. At a time when the word “gay” didn’t exist and the big studios created imaginary worlds with their films not only for their millions of viewers but also for their stars –whom they practically owned–any detour from the pre-established path meant great financial loss. Tab Hunter Confidential is a first-person journey through both the professional and intimate life of the actor, and it also brings up some lesser-known aspects of his life (such as him being a professional figure skater and a horse enthusiast). The classic “rise-stardom-fall” structure Hollywood is so fond of is carefully narrated, and includes his triumphal comeback by the hand of John Waters. The director of Pink Flanmingos revived the actor’s career when he hired him in 1981 to co-star Polyester with Divine, thus turning him into the 1980s’ John Travolta.
